Pokemon masters gameplay sessions for lore collection purposes. More or less a personal collection for myself for referential purposes. Supercut in progress.
Pokemasters technically isn’t canon timeline wise but characterization wise it’s said to be like “the canon versions” of these characters interacting as the writers consult with scenario writers and stuff.
TPCi probably has a lot of internal things to deal with. Less on gacha or gameplay aspects here. Not really looking to do like, score attacks or anything, mostly just story stuff and inane ramblings.

Things I knew about masters before playing it: Rosa Think Emoji (which is the icon), hashtag incident, and that's about it outside of seeing people talk about pulls and me be like: "I've already gotta worry about playing GI and HSR I am not putting that on my radar" and then eventually caving because I ran out of room on my devices for those huge games.

Pokemon friends is not free to play at all like even finishing up some of the later quests gets paywalled so the amount of plushies are limited by the purchasable sets. Silver is a funny case of being brooding and grumpy and a menace to Johto, the nicest place in Pokemon ignoring the crime yakuza which he is the son of, and it’s only more absurd in his manga iterations which either double down the menace (golden boys) or make him have the insane family drama on top of what’s already in game. He’s up there with Lillie and Gladion in “most likely to be protagonist if not for player character existing” tier. Most rivals fit that slot easily tbh. The XY rivals are just there in the game tbh. I really have nobody in the sword corner who are truly favorites, I struggled. Like a lot of sword's story revolved around something I didn't really care about which meant a lot of the characters didn't fit to my mind...? **Where do I put Mewtwo because game Mewtwo’s elaboration is the pokemon mansion but I know a lot of people probably immediately thought of anime movie Mewtwo so I just put the Mon in category 2 because there are multiple Mewtwo I could’ve been thinking of at any given point. Anyone remember shadow Mewtwo from pokken? 9 isn’t here because I haven’t played nine yet but I feel like by default it’s gonna be all the route characters (Penny, Arven, Nemona) and some DLC guys (Carmine, Kieran) because they have actual arcs. And also Larry. I like him. Pokemon scarlet as an accidental meta commentary narrative on game freaks railroading style and also a stand by me reference with the 4 guys. Masters Coverage (Post Season 1) Man I just updated the chart and now there’s Neo champs alola edition Nipping this in the bud right now and I’m not doing the TCG cards as they come out This is what I’ll call the senior privilege Florian has been added to masters sporting his violet attire and the only one from the violet timeline/universe (Pokémon has a confusing terminology thing going on that is muddied.) There are also arc suits for both Ethan and silver but to be honest I might not put them on the page as is because I feel like arc suits are sort of blatant OP cash grab recolors. In the Nikki games like infinite and love, clothes give you superpowers Awesome In Pokemon masters the clothes give you superpowers Cringe In Pokemon mystery dungeons the scarves and ribbons Awesome In Pokémon contests the clothes boost your stats I think Pokemon should be about… Pokemon. Not so much the people sometimes. I guess that’s why I like some spinoffs more. Since they’re usually on pokemon… Every single Pokemon out there is someone’s favorite, or they have some sort of story to tell about them. So I’m gonna work through a list bit by bit to write about people’s personal experiences with Pokemon, whether it be big or small, combing through gens with bit’s of my own personal experiences or just trivia. That'll be a fun thing... NOT. I'll call it like, the personal pokemon project (PP) heehee... Not bothering with dates anymore because I have NOT been keeping up with masters whatsoever I should play more events, but I only play ones that interest me most time… my bad. Sometimes Masters characterization for characters aligns to what I think about them and other times it's like... Yeah they’re gonna exaggerate their quirks and make stuff up for them for money Like the info learned from masters certainly isn’t going to affect the way I see them in their home games because like at best you get the involvement level of black and white where the gym leaders do stuff and gen 7 was great for that kind of thing of the cast just hanging around and at worst you get an early gen where they’re just there and don’t get any expansion until a remake. I don’t think there’s been a Gen more shafted than gen 4, they didn’t even get redesigns. So it turns out some stuff in masters is stuff that’s directly translated from the OG Japanese text which is where the title Lily livered comes from which apparently was never in the English localization so I’ll have to keep an eye out for stuff that characters reference as if it’s normal but also it’s been like 1 whole decade since I played sumo so that might be a problem Like the whole nugget quest which is because in japan nuggets in pokemon are slang for something else entirely... I think we need far weirder picks like Cool trainer Vito Winstrate, AKA the one guy in Hoenn with a family who thinks he’s the greatest dude ever and the whole family is optional so you could theoretically just flatten the guy in victory road and never connect the dots or the battle tower apprentices from emerald becauase like, my vision is literally just "the weirdest most hyperniche picks ever" as opposed to "popular character in a costume" I wish pokemon masters was allowed to be weirder but not in blatant money making schemes like whatever was going on with the academy and the arc suits as a whole Like there’s a canonical multiverse and aside from a handful of events they’ve never considered it but instead a lot of stories revolve around infinite tournament arcs and battles but the game doesnt have budget for battles most of the time so it has to be offscreen or the characters have to narrate and carry it It would be a really sick RPG but it's got a battle style that's just like, huh...? Florian from Violet is like the only multiverse guy so far what about the kanto trio bias. It might just be manga influence. It is not, it might be smash bros brawl Me thinking about how cool subspace emissary was Wait, it really might be brawl... My masters wishes Leaf… her character: she is nice and likes eevee I want her to do more things, because she was my first protagonist and not May, and now it's like, I have had years of fake made up headcanons and fanlore and she's just... kinda there. I wish she had more friends. I just don't think I'm into the popular characters... I am far happier accepting masters as a fanservice game and ignoring it aside from cool trivia bits and looking at characters I like Because otherwise my brain starts driving in circles trying to make any of this make any sense to actual game stories When masters inevitably shuts down or gets to FEH levels of reading skills that I’ll ignore, I’ll probably just do like, a single round of screenshots, dump all my rolls, and then get annoyed when masters ex premium rolls out for like $20 bucks or something. Masters makes no money though when Pocket made more than its entire revenue so I don’t think it’s going anytime anywhere soon, good? Glooming as a pastime? We don’t have any characters like that anymore and if they’re mean for a moment they immediately snap back to being nice. I liked Kieran when e was being mean and having a joker moment but obviously he would’ve been redeemed or it would’ve been Pecharunt because idk, Pokémon tends to just casually have poison legendaries ruining people’s lives There’s only been 2? 3. I forgot about Eternatus and like, Nihilego doesn’t count as a legendary but come onnnn If you hate Carmine we can’t be friends because she is experiencing the pain of being the eldest daughter Pokemon in interviews is said to be utopian which turns the villains whose motivations involve a mass worldview that doesn’t exist into flimsy motivations because the devs are applying real world logical points. But to actively turn that idealistic Pokemon world into something that actually matches the viewpoints would probably turn it into something fan theory territory wise. You know where it’s like “this game is dark and everyone is in HELL and pikachu said FUCK and pissed on my shoes.” This is why characters like Volo and Cyrus fall fast for being JRPG villains that want to use god to change the world because it’s pretty chill like that. It’s kind of mildly funny that Cynthia turned directly to the screen and went “everyone we need to get more arc suits” even though that pissed Giratina off so much that Volo went yoink.

Pokemon masters strongest point writing wise so far has been less about the tournament and more on the writers managing to scrounge up personalities for some characters who get like, a handful of sentences max per game (maybe more depending on if their remake allowed for extra content).
The last battle being locked and the final moment having both members down aside from Pikachu…. Anime moment. My thoughts. That sure was a tournament arc. It feels like the writers decided last minute to change things to be about Lear instead which was a good move because I felt like he was the best character because my favorite characters are usually the ones who are the grade A haters.

the thing with pokemon lore and canon is basically it's got more holes than swiss cheese because there's multiple timelines and parallel universes and things that might swipe back to becoming canon even if it was something from like a japanese exclusive book that never got translated.
the worlds are actively falling apart with people getting sucked into various wormholes or being summoned by god(s) or sucked into magic rings by hoopa or just casually having time travel invented but only for sending pokemon, teleportation, magic users, guys who can shoot out the kamehameha and literal superpowers, and basically it's like a magical sci-fi world full of storytelling potential that sometimes gets explored in other material like animation or manga or spinoffs.
in the mainline games, all of these things are usually flavor text for the players to go catch new pokemon or beat the league.
example: did you know that the skater girl korrina from gen 6 can skate so hard she can literally break rocks? no? well, she's here to battle you. basically, the only place these things can be properly talked about would be the anime, the manga, or this game. They're all wildly different takes too, so good luck trying to get it to all line up.
anyways, reason I'm bringing this up is because the terminology is left so vague within the games proper that people get confused which is why I even began trying to compile stuff because I literally had no clue myself. Florian and Juliana are in, but since Florian wears purple and is from "another world", people thought that he had amnesia like other characters said to be from other worlds/timelines.

Seems rather silly. I mean, other child centric nintendo adjacent franchises don't have me and other fans scratching their heads like this unless Zelda's weird timeline bits count.
I know that it's probably extremely petty to be this needlessly pendantic over pokemon lore, but if pokemon wants to have this long standing lore and make all these interesting speculative story bits placed sporadically through the main stories and NPC dialogue that get immediately buried much to fan confusion they could have like, a single lore book or something. Having this stuff tucked in a gacha game so far has not been worth it because it’s been quite unfruitful aside from scattered info through days out and events.

I really wish I had any kind of interest in any actually popular human characters in Pokémon with personalities who are more likely to get costumes and be in events but I really had to like the blank slate player insert character that has a warped personality in my mind because I consider them different characters due to reading manga and playing smash bros brawl.
Really, my favorite parts of this entire game’s plot so far are Lear not having a second of this happy go lucky world tournament he arranged to try and beat a single guy who immediately beelined to go grinding and probably regarded Lear as a footnote like how he immediately ground Miku into the dirt. Red is a menace.
Lear is the funniest guy to me because this is a grown man beefing with a newbie
Some pretty funny incidental dialogue will just pop up in between battles with NPCs like, “my average test score is one!”

I’ve been watching horizons again and I think Friede would be a really fun guy to just add into the game so captain pikachu can be there because cap’s vibes rule.
I think a character who is stoic needs to have a character that bounces off them in a humorous sort of way. Or just put them in situations where their expertise all of a sudden doesn’t work. The neo champions event for kanto had red absolutely demolish children in battle and somehow it worked and he has zero flaws whatsoever (to the point that it kind of aggravates me because every protag but him gets to do stuff but his entire thing is being the coolest guy (tm) and beating everyone to the point it feels like parody) but I want to see that exaggerated to the point that kids are like 50-50 on either admiring or fearing him. The funniest thing they’ll probably never do is give him a Christmas alt where he gets really into delivering presents at an efficient rate to the point everyone goes “he’s completely cracked at this” but whereas everyone else probably hand delivers the presents Red launches his towards the nearest person in the vicinity and then flies off on his Charizard and/or he literally just chucks them at people without getting off. In comedy terms, he’d be the straight man.

Or they could’ve just used origins Red… i mean, thats where the mega charizard link comes from originally…
Do I care about any other pokemon characters aside from a handful that aren’t just playable characters (or Blue/Green). Uhhh… working on it. Idk, Falkner, I guess. Sabrina? Will. Crasher Wake, Roxie. Roxanne but that’s because the game literally locked her onto my account for like months on end I couldn’t figure out why. Agatha and Koga are pretty cool. Shauntal but I think that’s literally because oomf likes Shauntal. Bianca and Cheren… Hugh… Lillie, but she’s got enough costumes in this game, it’s a bit much. Anabel, but that’s only because of her role in gen 7, Kahili, but that’s because of her lack of a role in gen 7, Lt. Surge, Nanu, Paulo seems like he’s gonna be a little hater and I have a thing where I’m like “oh, a hater!” And I’ve accepted that whenever I write or watch something there will be a hater that I focus my attention onto (this happened with Transformers.)
Ryuki’s there too because he has a cool design, but he didn’t do anything. I like Shauna after playing through X, she’s just a nice girl. I like Tierno and Trevor as well but that’s entirely because of their pokemon adventures depictions rather than their in game appearances. Whitney and Jasmine are kinda cool. Piers because he’s kind of funny because he looks like if Cruella de vil’s coat came to life. I like Rika and Larry and Iono and Arven and Penny and Nemona and Kieran but I haven’t played those games.
The thing is I like these characters a bit but also not enough to like, spend money on them, and since I’m an F2P, I’m less inclined because I don’t play often enough to justify dumping all of my gems when chances are next thing I know there’s a new shiny alternate unit of a guy I actually want. The player characters and rivals are kind of a mix of “what can I take from Masters to incorporate into my headcanons for them” and even then that’s a 50-50 shot because most of the time I’d probably just ignore that since I’ve had the headcanons longer than I’ve thought about masters.
I think there could be more generic trainer classes since the designs are kind of a mix of the 3ds NPCs for this game. Like, I’d love to just have an aether foundation guy just hanging around as a playable guy being like “my boss is wilding and my pay sucks.” In a game full of the many quirky human personalities somehow I end up thinking about the generic NPCs. Masters makes like no sense from a main game story standpoint because if all of these super important gym leaders and champions and PCs and rivals are all on Pasio, who’s in charge of the actual regional activities back in their respective regions. Overthinking the fanservice game is something only I would do. I’m glad I can skip to later arcs without needing to play through earlier chapters like fire emblem heroes does. I wouldn’t want to have to do it all over with Scout again.

I’m good with not screenshotting everything anymore. Eevee kind of shot up in mascot energy but I remember a time where it was mostly just a fan mascot. Eevelutions was a fan term for a while too until like, Pokémon rangers used it I think? Like that’s the first time it was officially used. You ever think about how the Pokémon world is falling apart at the seams with random time holes? Or hoopa portals? Like every game in a gen introduces another random multiversal jumping thing. I think a lot of why gen 1 was like that is uh.... when you try to write out a gen 1 adaption, how do you handle actual gen 1 content and not just the FRLG revision? Well my headcanon is literally that kanto is just unhinged compared to other regions.
Like in terms of the capsule Mon stuff and like the whips, and like team rocket, and like, a possible war theory, and the overindustrialization, and the abundance of poison types, and how unhinged the anime was for the indigo league.

Sorry I’m just thinking about Red again in terms of Masters and what I’ve seen of him so far where if I wasn’t a Red fan beforehand based on like other stories and like in terms of Reds Masters Red is sitting in mid tier at his best and low tier at his worst and I think the problem is that some of Red’s things/actual kanto feats have been split up between all the various kanto protagonists between Leaf, Chase, and Elaine so the only thing they can really work with is “Red, the cool guy who lived on Mt. Silver and is the strongest ever (tm)” instead of like my “Red, the cool guy who lived on Mt. Silver and is the strongest ever but is also a kid who does some silly stuff sometimes.” I believe that a character can be slightly more entertaining when the impression and reputation of the character doesn’t match up to their actions. If Red was humbled where it’s like the daigo party happened to him so his rep tanked but also he was like the wazzler and obliterating everyone who tried touching MVC2 I would be more entertained. I don’t want him to have a big reputation and be super praised, I just want him to be an unexpected terror to the populace of Pasio. He should be the kind of guy who looks at you when a bus is rolling and then the bus passes and he’s gone. It’s another contradiction up here.

I think Red should’ve obviously had his whole child prodigy thing that led to him leaving, but I also think the world should’ve immediately hopped onto the next child prodigy instead of like immortalizing him as like the living legend title from BW2 which pretty much cemented him as “red, so mysterious, no one knows a thing about him. Also there’s his rival we know literally everything about that guy.” Sorry, all I’ve got are FGC analogies and Sonic Pokémon could be like the FGC where like a single person can show up and destroy the regulars Mt Silver Evo Moment 37.
Pokémon’s Bigfoot but he’ll beat you up if you look too long. In terms of like personality it seems like any “nice” traits he had also got tossed out in terms of making him like I said last time “always on the grind 24/7” becuase like why was his copycat event taken away and given to leaf. Like canonically within GSC/HGSS proper it’s always been Red who gave her the doll but in Masters itself with lobby dialogue, it’s Leaf. Because Leaf as a character in Masters kind of just… exists…. Honestly I feel like if you really wanted Red and Leaf to be more distinct then make it so that Leaf is the one doing all the Sevii island event stuff and red keeps all his gen 1 stuff because Sevii island proper is entirely skippable in FRLG until postgame because if it’s skipped than it IS the postgame. And since pokemon literally has a canon multiverse you’d think they’d take advantage of that to have more whacky weird AU stuff in terms of the game created to sell as many characters as possible.
Unfortunately because masters has to exist in the vacuum of the character’s most marketable form and story we are never going to see the oppurtunity of like a character who gets burnout. Leaf is always going to be the cute one, Blue/Green will always be second fiddle, Red will always be the best and flawless and any potential for flaws gets snuffed out by “oh, that red!”, Ethan will never quite beat him, and uhhhh… the undefeatable champion Leon will remain the undefeatable champion Leon and we will not know what it would be like for him to live like post SWSH where he is not that. (Note: I know he has a battle tower alt in the game. I don’t know the dialogue. But the single event I played with him pre note taking method where he walked out of the ocean is probably proof enough that he’s been mostly static.)
I still think it would be immensely funny to have an arc suit given to Larry even though I already know it’s going to the most marketable characters. Or in general, instead of doing what they did with those abysmal rates and in general everyone got an arc costume and completely destroy the metagame. This is why I am an ideas guy and not a game developer aside from being crap at coding. By the way, DeNA codeveloped fire emblem heroes so I now know exactly what to expect when dealing with this sort of thing in terms of power creep.

A champion that is a prodigy and then mostly bored out of their mind is a factor for Nemona based on what little I know for SV, but thankfully she’s a happy person and not like actively using her champion pokemon and powers to like, cause havoc. 8/29 No good summons today. I have not been this exhausted by a single person in MONTHS. I’ve had extreme burnout the whole morning and I can’t bring myself to play this game because I feel like my cynical attitude will make this game the target of extreme unwarranted disdain today. A large part of complaints primarily come from me disliking that a large chunk of the mobile game industry is full of games i feel would be better if they were not slot machines and filled with godawful rates but unfortunately that is the way the game industry is.

They blatantly said “yeah the kanto guys are up next bozo” Alola… This blatant shill moment did pretty much signal to me in my mind and like I think a lightbulb went off that red is literally on the same level of battle maniac grinding that Hilda and Nemona are portrayed as in this game and that’s why he hung out with them with zero issue If he actually talked his dialogue would probably be nothing but that as well You’re quite good at hiding your nerd level, aren’t you… it’s cute, but it’s not endearing me today. My 10 ticket pulls sucked but I have zero incentive for the banners currently up There are 7 paid banners up in comparison to the 3 regular ones Yolo Nemona! Wally. Yolo Nemona! …I got another Lana. I beat my mono sword ghost run so I went back to doing days out psyche I went back to story Thinking about red and his eventual arc suit: erm. Well tbh couldn’t the arc suit for fire be Leon and his Charizard Oh shit yeah What would red be Pikachu Oh yeaahhhh…

The kanto trio is a likely shoe in, which means it’s either their starters or their aces, but leaf is associated with either venusaur or Eevee and it makes no sense for Eevee and it would make less sense for it to be venusaur if the other in this hypothetical is arc suit Green and Pidgeot for flying I mean they could always just make more arc suits for more types than just one I guess. They leaked 3 arc suits for fire bug and dark Chances are it’s all champions and alder has a bug

But it would be really funny for like some randos and jokes Like imagine being alder and then arceus like god goes “bless you my child” Guzma.

Like Masters can hint at it but unless they specifically namedrop Leaf as Blue/Green then you’re going to have nonsense takes from me for the rest of time since there was nothing to work with and somehow in my mind they are separate and like I know they are the same because that makes the most sense and yet I’m here like “ehhhh idk.” if I heard and saw masters do something weird characterization wise I'd go "oh that's interesting" and move on. Pokemon introduces stuff to the lore that people ignore all the time.

It’s kind of like the name thing feels like a seniority kind of thing where it’s like meta wise it can’t make sense to call Leaf Blue because no matter the game I noticed in the manual version that Red was always called either Red or Green Like if games kept up the name conventions of using in game names there’s a chance that Lyra/Kotone could’ve just been called or maybe even labeled as Heart or Soul within internal data. That’s not the case whatsoever. Like in some alternate world Ethan is still labeled as Gold (they are NOT listed as separate because it makes no sense to have two guys who have done the exact same thing with the exact same name) but it makes no sense for crystal and Lyra to be the same character because they look so different (this is very funny because in Pokespe they literally do this for everyone including Blue and Crystal just wearing the outfits of the new characters)

There’s a lot of different ways to use “I” in Japanese utilized in situations and levels of politeness Aika is usually reserved for young girls Boku is used by young boys and tomgirls Ore is used for people who have arrogance, it’s seen as one of the more rude options I think anata is a ruder way to use (you) Watashi is reserved for older people I think Atashi is the female version of that A real super formal one is Watakushi and Atakushi which are normally used by like super formal types or older people

A lot of the younger characters (protag types) in masters usually use like Watashi and Atashi whenever their I’s are voiced (the girls, mosst girls don't use boku unless they're extreme tomgirls) and the boys tend to go with boku and I haven’t figured out what Rival/Blue/Green’s is yet

I’d assume that within maybe like the Japanese version of RGBY he’d use something more masculine since he refers to himself as the genius green at one point based on Origins which is script accurate apparently but it might be a bit much for him to use “Ore” afterwrds, GSC/HGSS might either be Boku or Watashi? It’s not exactly one of those things that can be googled well and I don’t know enough written Japanese, I’m mostly reliant on audio and piecing together what little I know from anime knowledge.

The Banishment of Ash Ketchum

Ash exists in Masters but since I never did the event I will never have him and he seemed to be a one and done collab thing where the company in charge has been making sure he’s been scrubbed out ever since It’s kinda sad if you didn’t get him and liked his character too

Animal crossing pocket camp is announcing end of service but coming back as an offline playable app which gives me hope that more Nintendo mobile games will be like that if they do die instead of being outright vaporized from existence Then again pokemas is a joint project so it could go the dragalia lost way but I hope not; that’d be a waste.

In terms of gameplay pokemon is purely mechanics and the Amie bonus is just also a mechanical thing but in terms of story and especially in this game its friendship and bonds and unless you the player are actively making up stories for the pokemon then there’s not much to work with Do you nickname every pokemon you come across?

Interregional interactions are pretty cool, gotta hand that to masters because that's like the part I enjoy as a crossover that has a story like Subspace or Project X Zone or fighting game stories that have crossover stories that aren't just "woah these guys showed up, that's weird, wanna fight?" . The anniversary artwork showed Red hanging out with Hilda and Nemona buying them ice cream and stuff. Red’s characterization in this one piece of artwork is very cute. He’s not an edge lord nor an anxiety guy, he’s just a guy. He’s a nice guy, he’s kind, curious, he’s just stoic based on his game depiction and none of my headcanons. He’s a little polite, he’s just a chill guy, he’s got no social problems whatsoever, he’s obliterating my headcanons and I’m happy for him. But the masters depiction is goddamn boring otherwise like the entire foundation of the game exists because Lear got mad he got beat in a fight and Red doesn’t even give a shit and in the Neo champions conversation somehow Red trouncing a bunch of kids actually worked better as a lesson than whatever Leaf and BlueGreen were doing like ???? Whatever.
And the game makes me have second hand cringe sometimes because of my research and like every event red shows up in it’s like “it’s red! He’s the coolest! Right!” And I am like “yeah he is but keep it down, you’re scaring the pokemon away”

Anniversary Side Section (ASS)

The new masters anniversary units have been revealed accidentally with a leak! It’s Cynthia, Lance, and Steven! In special Arceus outfits! It looks… I felt nothing whatsoever. Am I supposed to be excited for this or something? Really is just a popularity contest for units I guess. Marketability and shit. I really looked at that and 0 reaction whatsoever. Thank god that the opinion of that seems to be unanimous when I checked the pokemas r*ddit even though that place is the spot where I was like “you guys talk about the meta???” There might be a new Lillie! Confirmed real!

I’m going to be honest, I don’t care. Yeah I think I might really just be in it only for the characters I care about, doing Sygna Suit Cynthia’s day out gave me like 0 incentive to want to explore her character any further. Cynthia is like the normal basic girl pick ever and like to me she has negative rizz and the harder she’s pushed the less I am going to personally care.

You would think there would be like slightly better stuff for some characters especially when they get alts for like: here's what they would do in this scenario, here's an microscopic look to this character who has 2 sentences of dialogue in the entire franchise somehow and even then you still get stuff like “I’m hanging out with Wulfric because he decided letting an Avalugg loose was a good idea and now we’re stuck here” I really can’t imagine what it would be like to be a masters only player and the only pieces of characterization you get is if someone at the dev team remembers that these characters exist outside of like one event where they need a themed trainer

It’s kind of weird how the word champion has been completely diluted the further you go with main games and Masters because now they’re throwing out champion titles like they’re participation trophies to try and say “good job!” This is definitely because you are a character with good personality traits and not because we want to make more money using the more popular characters in new costumes with meta breaking traits! (That’s what it is, always has been.) not falling for that. Like if I was a trainer in universe I’d definitely be like “this looks like nepotism ngl”

Veevee!

Penny is a nice character, but her hair color drives me nuts. Can the blue be like black or something. Also, I like how Hugh and Bianca literally don’t even have eevee but they just hung out anyways.

Have Leaf and Professor oak ever interacted within masters? The fact that the rivalry of Red and his rival is most emphasized and Leaf was also there seems to be a thing that is consistent. Leaf probably has a bonus since she’s from Kanto and Pallet Town but idk. I don’t have a Leaf to check. I checked Bulbapedia No, he only mentions her in a single line during the neo champions arc. Weird!
This isn’t even a pokemon exclusive thing to just completely ignore protagonists over the other and pokemon was kind of notoriously bad for this for years outside of the anime featuring a playable girl and they were usually shoved into contests (and if you liked the boy protags closest you got was maybe ash wearing their clothes) until like only recently where it's like "oh yeah... we should market more protagonists for anniversary stuff...". Definitely started with Serena, I think, so uh, good job, Serena. (then again it's been like a whole decade thinking about this, maybe there was more stuff back then but I just never paid attention to it the way I do now.)

Basically if your name wasn't Red, and you weren't in the anime, the only other depiction during that timeframe was usually the games or Special. That was it. Maybe some merchandise.

In a lot of RPGs, usually even if there is a male or female choice outside of like maybe official art, the male protagonist is usually the canonical or promoted pick. Or like in games where there's a perfectly good pick for a girl pick option like Zelda and then the director is like "nah". Just look at P3 fans going feral with mods for their female protag or how Gudako (girl) is normally treated as the joke option for FGO animated content. Hakuno from Fate Extra got an entire anime season, Hakunon (girl) only showed up to die at the start of the series. Djeeta had to be DLC for the fighting game of granblue when she's literally the other player avatar. Took until Smash Ultimate for Leaf to be an alt costume. Fire Emblem's had this issue too with male avatars in promo material but everyone liking the female character's more design wise but thankfully they've let up with that I think. IDK.

I feel bad for Leaf, I said potential girl as a joke (because I was watching a lot of JJK) but it really does feel like in this game based on her dialogue she's just here like "I was here too! I love Eevee! " (I do too, but that's not the point.) Benched for years on end, got a fan design in alola but never showed up, I thought she was the alternate universe equivalent of Red (so she'd never show up unless shennagins because during the Alola hype train when they talked about that I thought maybe she'd be a bonus boss or something (the mod battles with Leaf there didn't help either because they also used the fan designs) , but at least she's not a spinoff protag because those guys basically gather dust in a corner lol. I think I even drew her once during the Alola hype thing.

Everything about details to trainers given out in Pasio is canon until they get to Pasio. So someone mentioning a past event is canon, but if it happened in Pasio then it’s not canon. So everything that happens in story mode is not canon, but the characterization is. Stuff like the Neo champions and certain pairings if they’re Pasio specific are not mainline “canon”, but they are pokemon masters canon. This is an incredibly stupid statement and this is why having a canon multiverse with alternate timeline multiverses is a headache. This is very funny coming from someone who used to be into Kirby lore and also listened to Sonic lore where they said “everything is canon.” So therefore, to make this less headache inducing for myself, everything is canon so therefore nothing is.

I’ve never really given much thought to NPCs in battle and their relationships beforehand, like something like Whitney’s Milktank never got much of a story or character within the game itself, right? It’s interesting because beforehand I didn’t really think “oh that’s a gym leader and their signature pokemon”, they mostly had like a few sentences at best and just sat in their gym for the rest of the game until I’d say like gen 5 where they could be spotted doing other things or gen 4 HGSS where they had their phone call rematches and the rest of them had to work with whatever the anime did or Pokespe or any other manga like how the golden boys gave Falkner an Articuno or maybe some official artwork where Whitney played baseball with an Aipom and Pokemas wants you to see the characters more as people instead of just being yet another pokemon battle. So you can spend money on them.

Riley said that aura are like “vibes”. I’m suspecting that it might just be the pokemon version of like anime power level terms or maybe the power of the sun like in Jojo. It’s like you know like Aether from FFXIV where it’s the life force of everything. It’s like Mana… yeah not gonna lie this just sounds like another term for magic , they already have psychic powers. Apparently the main character’s is completely blank, which makes sense, because they’re not really much of a person as much as a representative avatar for the person behind the screen, which is why everyone has to be neutral or praise towards them and assume “you must love pokemon, right?” I do, but that’s not the point.

Thorton is short for Throckmorton. I just made that up. The power of friendship in fact is a thing that can be weaponized within the Pokémon world. In game lore versus gameplay status basically means that pokemon Amie is the most broken thing in the world.

The suit maker is a guy huh… They’re trying to do that thing in Sycamore’s plot episode about Lysandere and the resource problem and my solution is probably too far for a pokemon game since my solution would be to abolish capatalism Sycamore is the one who wrote a message in Couriway town… is that the one where it’s like “meet me at the usual place?” I think Sycamore and Lysandere also had a bad breakup. You know, if I existed in pokemas and Gloria wanted to fight me with a legendary I would not. Kahili loves golf but also snuggling next to her pokemon, but it pecked her like a woodpecker because she fell asleep in its mouth. …alola sure does have a lot of interesting people. Lusamine really just happened to dress up coincidentally as the roach which is so funny to me. People used to seriously theorize characters to ultra beasts based on the dex leak but the only one in the end was Lillie.
I need to get my alt account to catch up to my main at chapter 7 and then I will continue playing on my main and not just do hangouts. But also I need to make this not super image heavy, so instead of using every screenshot I’m just gonna use only screenshots of dialogue I found interesting (probably just the kanto trainers then.)

Feb 2024– Early Glimpse at Masters

I don’t get masters. Like, I think I’ve written that down before but I need to emphasize that I have zero interest in the Pokémon trainers of Pokémon minus like, a handful. I told this to my friend once that there’s a world full of magical creatures and people wanted to focus on the human beings and I had no clue why. So the incentive of playing the game to get gems to summon them doesn’t work because… I guess they can’t compete with the mainline gameplay. I’ve never seen anyone else talk about this one ever outside of the one twitter tag incident and occasional trivia. I don’t even know what the plot of this one is outside of it being a tournament arc story. I gave it a bit more time and I've gotten more into masters because of the anniversary prep and summoning for characters that I actually recognize (Red) and getting some of the appeals of Masters being "the incredibly interesting gacha where it's clear no one is paying attention so it's full of memes." I battled through some of the plot on my main where it's clear that everyone on Pasio is a weirdo and on my alt I went to the legendary plot line and immediately got Giovanni and was incredibly confused that he's allowed in the lounge and you can basically just chat with him . Meanwhile my main feels like they're sandwiched in between Red and Blue since I'm only using the Red buff for Blue. I'm considering Pokemon masters as a bizarre experiment and I wonder if they'll let more old guys into the lounge. (I mean Blue as in the rival, which is what the ENG version calls him (I normally call him Green). I also have an account where everyone speaks Japanese.)

I had been playing on/off again but only really thought to myself "hey maybe I could get more characterization for certain characters by playing the gacha instead of going "my headcanons..."" I have Sync Suit Green/Blue on my JP account so naturally I had to get Red I have Green/Blue and Red on my ENG account so I get sync suit Leaf to make up for it Note: this was before I randomly yolo summoned base leaf on my alt
Said I’d do this, recall? I’ll make a page for it too once I have enough photos. In total, main story has 30 chapters, villain arc has 10, legendary adventures is its own thing with 8 chapters, and mysterious stone story is still going. My main priority is the main story and its lore for pokemon, not so much characters outside of a few. I don’t know how this gameplay works. I am just hitting things.

The story so far is basically just “okay everyone, let’s get people for the tournament! That Lear’s a real shithead.” He kind of reminds me of like, the Digimon emperor from 02. Apparently canonically Red beat up Lear (in a battle) and Lear got so mad he wanted a salty run back but Red so far hasn’t given a single shit and is too busy doing jackshit on the island, showing up to troll his rival, and beating everyone up like a chaotic force of nature. So you know, typical Red behavior. Maybe what I’m looking for is in the events or villain arc or something. I haven’t seen anything yet but I might rewatch earlier ones after I get further in or since I’m only on chapter 7 I could spare a few rewatches or use my other account to refresh and see if there’s anything noteworthy. I’ll likely just end up summarizing every chapter as I go. I mostly spent session 1 doing “day with” stories on my ENG and JP account with characters I had btwn accounts. The game doesn’t really expect you to know who everyone is so it’s more or less just like you’re a newbie trainer and everyone wants to be on your team because… gacha game. Honestly this is more or less just a game where you’re getting their phone numbers for the tournament.

At the end of Lt.surge’s day out you blow up. In the JP dub he has English phrases. I had no clue how the Evo shards worked until I saw it was in the same side area thing. I am now forcibly hanging out with Will because his bird saw us have a future together. Dude really said “I need you”, take me out to lunch first man. Jasmine has the phrase of “Clang!” Also, she polishes her pokemon to be all shiny and stuff.
Noland fist fought his Pinsir. Brendan has dad problems. It’s so bizzare seeing a normal Brendan and his dad relationship after recently reading the Pokespe RS chapter where Norman fights his son with dramatic lightning and rain and then is like "you could've just TOLD me you were leaving, I am in support of you doing contests and stuff and I will love you even if you are different but you should've called your mom" and then it turns out his son is straight and then Norman also dies. He comes back though.
Brawly taught his pokemon to surf. Everyone really likes raising the protagonist, huh, like I am the unbreakable fighting spirit calm cool collected person and meanwhile I’m like “thanks I guess.” Oh, Brawly and Bruno are interacting, which is cool. (Thinking about the RS chapter again where Brawly was buddies with Bruno. Turns out that him and Bruno have trained together in game but no clue when that’s said unless it was NPC dialogue or rematch exclusive. ) he said bodacious.
Ran out of evolution stones for Hoenn though, tried getting more at the shop and left confused. That’s a lot of random junk to parse through…. I guess I’ll have to return to people who need evolutions later. I’ll label those with the filter.

Somehow the red leaf siblings thing got even more rooted into my brain as leaf is basically with red at all times and my headcanon is twins but the pokemas interpretation reads to me like a younger sister hanging out with her older brother and being semi-jealous of all his feats while she says “I’m gonna catch up!” She is the potential girl (deragatory) of Kanto, if and when but never is. (others following this logic would be yellow pokespe since she hasn't done anything noteworthy since emerald and Koharu of Journeys based on what little I know about her.) Girl, you need a rival or mayhaps an enemy that is not green or red. I would’ve suggested Misty but she is hanging out with Brock so uh, Erika. And her personality which I previously mentioned in the headcanons page as me not knowing it because I didn’t want to play another gacha game.
Well, she is nice. Anything else? She likes pokemon. It kinda looks like she does the hat brim thing red does or maybe I just screenshotted at the wrong time.
I also looked at some of her hangout events. She uh. Really likes flower picking. It’s kinda funny that I wrote life’s a gift in like 2022 but somehow managed to align lea’s logic with leaf’s logic on evolving eevee (but my in game logic was that I couldn’t figure out what to evolve eevee into since I had no need for Flareon by the time I got to e4 so I took advantage of the fact eevee wouldn’t be able to be hit by Agatha’s ghost types.) I looked at her lodge pairing stuff and it’s mostly harmless personality traits I could add where her best 10 point things are like, adventure, flowers, nature, bustling places, bags, sporty clothes, fame checkers, love for pokemon, grass and normal types, there’s a mention of misty, and …pewter crunchies? Apparently in the lodge conversation in other translations Blue/Green/Rival mentions that Leaf was seen sniffing her pokemon. I guess grass pokemon smell pretty nice. Zero comment on the Blue/Leaf/Green/Unused Girl debacle because I feel like Masters is implying they’re the same girl but not giving her the same name which raises more questions than it answers.

I’m being fairly neutral on this to be honest. I mean, follow my child logic for the red leaf sibling thing for a minute. First game was emerald, Brendan and May were established as both players and also simultaneously existed at the same time no matter what gender you picked in a story role.

Therefore, in my mind, all the player characters existed at the same time and had to have some level of connection and this was not contradicted when my next game was Diamond, and then Black, which also featured the other protag in a role even if it was minor. So when I bought leafgreen (my 3rdish game) and opened the manual which you can see on the manual page, I thought “oh, these two kids are siblings, because they kind of look similar.” The idea kind of died in my head when I was online and saw that people didn’t really think the same way as me but it kinda resurfaced in my mind during my headcanon brainstorming session. I think the chronological order of things must’ve been my siblings hand me down VHS tapes with some anime episodes, hand me down Emerald, Best Buy leafgreen, and then Pokespe Yellow which meant I had the most confusing interaction of Red as the character and concept because the next time I had any pokemon related content was brawl, which had Red labeled as Pokemon Trainer, so it must’ve been pretty weird but there’s no shot I’m remembering it right since I was 7… maybe it’s in a diary entry somewhere. But I also stopped keeping diaries after my sibling started reading them out loud to snitch on me, which might be a contributing factor to my trust issues. Doesn’t stop me from now venting online i guess lol. It won't be the case for everything I write though and it's definitely not the case for like canon interactions but I'm probably reading it with the wrong lens. If I write about them though, I'll specify which particular headcanon I'm going with (usually if there's a particular guy named Fire, then chances are that I'm going with the siblings thing. Yeah, sorry, I have a seperate headcanon where there are two distinct versions of Red in spite of the fact they're the same person. It started through a timeline thing and then kinda turned into it's own thing.)

Personally I think the concept of a pokemon protag who has a sibling is interesting, but only rangers 2 has ever done that

Unfortunately this runs the issue of “I need to make sure that I mention every single time which AU I’m going with if my headcanon siblings are siblings in it or not because I use the names of characters interchangeably between the Red and Fire and Blue and Leaf designs and the headcanon doesn’t apply to every single fic I write and if I don’t specify there will be problems for ME keeping track of who’s who”

This runs another issue of something like cross canon where I have to specify in my notes like “That’s Origins Red talking to Y2K Leaf, if she calls him Fire she has to explain that and Leaf doesn’t exist in the files verse since she’s Blue but Origins Red hasn’t met Blue yet” and my notes are full of stuff like that because the multiverse is a confusing concept by itself and I only make it worse for myself.

Writing oak has been difficult for me in some areas because he’s a quirked up grandpa in the anime, a neglectful grandfather in gen 1 depending on how you read it, and most fics and fangames tend to swing moral pendulums of “he’s the best!” Or “he’s the worst and sucks so bad.” So the hanging out with Oak episode where he just finds mew is kinda crazy. He seems to be more of the quirked up grandpa type in this game. I really wish there was a back button in this game so I don’t have to rewatch entire bits of dialogue if I see something I accidentally press over. FGO let’s you reread messages with the log…
Green was just hanging out casually with Agatha which also ties into my other theory that Oak and Agatha divorced/had a terrible break up but Agatha still hangs out with her grandkids. I still think it’s kinda messed up that people started referring to Green as the phantom champion after losing to Red, like, way to rub salt into the wound. He didn’t even last long enough to be registered in the hall of fame unless thats a fanon thing I picked up again.

They really do NOT want you saying starter pokemon, the amount of times I’ve seen partner is kinda crazy. I like how sync pairs and partners sounds like a serious thing but in JP they’re just called buddies and sync suits are called costumes…. I also read through the new UB event and Elio and Selene also carry sibling energy to me. I think they need to not have player characters have hair colors that are so similar to each other and/or let them exist in the story proper so that way people don’t go crazy with their headcanons like I did for Leaf. Oh well, guess that’s what happens when you basically neglect characters for years and then bring them back into a Gacha game. The event also seems to hard confirm to me that USUM is the canon one because there’s no way that they’d be like “UBs can be our friends” after witnessing Lusamine attempt to harm them by fusing with Nihilego.

Also did the Arven N event. Is that roger Craig smith as arven or just a guy who sounds like his sonic You know arven is right to be terrified, some dude just brought out a whole lightning dragon. N has zero sense of social skills whatsoever which you know, makes sense because of the plot of BW but boy howdy is it awkward to watch but then it just gets funny as hell when he starts getting chased down Sometimes I think about that old concept art of N because he’s got a lot of those. Yo, Hilbert is a short king.

They do have reruns but in a seperate spot…? Weird? Okay. No event compendium though… that sucks. I wonder how often reruns happen.
Basically the whole time my amount of work for pokemasters lore is probably just taking screenshots of dialogue and cropping and going "Green (Rival/Blue) I love you so much you are incredible don't let the haters get you down. Hi red." Whenever he says something. The summon rates are so bad I feel like I’m going to have to look at people’s YouTube videos for other outfits and units to see if there’s anything interesting. I still want a Bill unit in the game. Quite frankly my dream Pokemas would probably be a bunch of impossible picks like , Spinoff guys (ranger characters, conquest characters, anyone from pokemon duel, mangas) or joke units like Lord Helix but they’d never go for that kind of acknowledgement of fan content lest they open up a bizzare Pandora’s box. And deep cuts like that are unnecessary when they’d make far less money when you could just shove a more popular character into another costume.
